Solar Storm Peak

Solar Storm Watch Issued as Sun Enters Active Phase

Early Peak in Solar Activity Predicted

Geomagnetic Storms Possible, Affecting Power Grids and Communications

The sun is entering a period of increased activity, known as solar maximum, which is predicted to peak a year earlier than originally anticipated. This heightened activity has prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to issue a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Earth.

Solar flares, powerful eruptions from the sun's atmosphere, have been observed, triggering the geomagnetic storm watch. A severe geomagnetic storm can disrupt power grids, communications, and navigation systems. The peak of the storm activity is expected to occur between 2 am and 6 pm UTC today, June 22.

The sun's activity is tracked by monitoring the number of sunspots on its surface. The current solar cycle, which began in 2019, has been more active than initially predicted, leading to the earlier-than-expected peak in solar activity. This increase in activity aligns with the prediction that the current solar cycle would be the most active in decades.

The geomagnetic storm watch serves as an early warning to power companies, communications providers, and other critical infrastructure operators to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of the storm. The public is also advised to stay informed and be prepared for possible disruptions.
